Fix, Create, Empower: Rebuilding Confidence, One Skill at a Time
It can be hard to describe the feeling of picking up a tool for the first time , not just holding it, but using it. There’s a quiet thrill in it. A sense of “I can do this.” It’s not just about fixing things, it’s about rebuilding yourself, too.
At Mudita Salus CIC, we’ve seen first-hand how simple, practical skills can have a profound impact on wellbeing. Our Fix, Create, Empower workshops weren’t just designed to teach DIY - they were created to nurture confidence, independence, and connection, especially for women who have spent years putting themselves last.
Confidence Isn’t Loud - Sometimes, It’s Hands-On
Many of us were never taught how to use a drill, choose a wall plug, or build a planter box. DIY can feel like something you need permission to attempt, or a skill reserved for someone else.
But research shows that learning practical, hands-on skills can significantly improve our mental wellbeing. A study from the University of Otago found that engaging in creative tasks like building or making increases feelings of enthusiasm and flourishing. It creates a feedback loop: action builds confidence, and confidence encourages more action.
One participant from our workshop shared:
“It was great to learn skills I’ve wanted to master for years. It was great to have some time to do something for myself.”
This idea - of doing something for yourself - is powerful. And rare.
Why DIY Is About More Than Fixing Things
When we designed this workshop, it wasn’t just about teaching women how to use tools. It was about creating a space where they could try something new without fear of judgement. We keep our groups small (just two participants per session) and guide everyone gently, allowing time for questions, reflection, and lots of practice.
“I initially found the tools difficult to use,” one woman shared, “but I became more confident.”
That’s the journey. From uncertainty to “I’ve got this.” From hesitation to hammer in hand.
And it goes deeper than that. For some, it’s the first time in a long while they’ve had space to just be, not in a role, not caregiving or fixing everyone else’s problems, but reconnecting with their own sense of ability.
“Kim and Lee are so supportive and create a very nurturing environment.”
Creating a calming, nurturing setting matters. Many of the women who join us are dealing with anxiety, burnout, or overwhelm. They’re looking not just for skills, but for a sense of agency.
And agency, the ability to take action, is a known antidote to powerlessness and low mood.
Practical Ways to Build Confidence in Daily Life
You don’t need a workshop to begin rebuilding confidence (although we’d love to welcome you). Here are some gentle steps you can try:
Start small: Fix a loose handle, change a lightbulb, or hang a picture. Let yourself feel that sense of achievement.
Ask for support: Confidence grows faster when we’re guided. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or take a class.
Talk to yourself kindly: Notice the stories you tell yourself - are they holding you back? Would you speak to a friend that way?
Practice something new weekly: Whether it’s using a screwdriver or trying a mindfulness exercise, small acts of bravery build inner strength.
Remember you’re allowed to learn: You don’t need to get it right the first time. Mistakes are part of the process.
As one of our attendees said:
“Everything was clearly explained. I felt comfortable asking questions.”
That’s the environment we strive for, one where growth feels possible and safe.
You Deserve to Feel Capable
There’s something deeply healing about turning a piece of wood into a planter box, with your own hands. About looking at a shelf and knowing you hung it. Confidence is not about being fearless, it’s about doing the thing anyway, and letting yourself be surprised.
Whether you're someone who's always put others first, someone who's felt intimidated by DIY, or simply someone curious to try something new, you’re welcome at our work bench. We hold these spaces for you.
🌿 Our next Fix, Create, Empower workshops are coming up soon, with both weekday and weekend options available. There are only two spots per session to keep things calm and personal.
